How the Collection Began

Hotchkiss Colorado

HOTCHKISS. COLORADO

The following information was recently shared with me,

So, the story goes: my parents purchased an operating hardware store in this building in 1990. I own it now,
started a workwear store in it when I outgrew the hardware store space and moved the hardware store across
the street around 1996. Sometime after that, we had a huge sewer backup (and the building was empty so no
one noticed it for a bit). We ended taking off the wall shelving that had been erected on all sides of the building,
tile glued on the floor, a complete restoration. Underneath the shelving walls, was this picture that neither we or
the previous owner even knew about. The building had been a hardware store since 1942. I knew that it had
been a pool hall/ saloon during the 1910's-1920's, which I believe is when this painting was done because I have a
picture dated within that time, and you can see a portion of this painting in that picture.
When we found it, I contacted an art restorer (hard to find in this part of the world), who could not identify the
painter and stated that it is best left alone instead of trying to patch the holes when the shelving went up. So, it
is now a cool piece of history in this town. I was never able to identify the artist, and just loved it as is.
An artist came in a while ago to look at it- lots of people do; it's a historical landmark- and she was sure that
Browning did it. After looking at your website, I believe she was right. This is just a larger scale. It is on canvas glued
to the plaster wall. There has been considerable debate on where the image came from. There are several areas around
here that it could be, or just came out of the artist's head. If visiting the address is 178 E.Bridge St. Hotchkiss CO 81419

Following are some photos of this painting. And the outside of the building.
